RFI Shielding

Features & Uses

RFI (radio frequency interference) shielding is a method of protecting electronic devices and technological systems from damaging electromagnetic interference (EMI). One of the most effective materials for defending against these electromagnetic waves is metal mesh — particularly copper wire cloth.

Typically, EMI is generated from large electronic equipment to smaller devices. However, small electronics can also transmit waves that negatively affect other systems.

As a result, electronics tend to malfunction due to:

  • The suppression of radio signals within a device

  • Internally generated emissions, which interfere with functionality

  • Ambient interference from the outside, which impacts operation efficiency

Protective metal cloth is essential for safeguarding valuable electronic equipment and ensuring it runs properly. One of the oldest examples of this is the Faraday cage, which is wrapped in conductive material. The enclosure was invented by Michael Faraday in 1836 to block electromagnetic fields.

Modern RFI shielding is used to protect a broad range of electronic equipment, including but not limited to:

  • Hand-held computers

  • Smart meters

  • Battlefield tactic meters and stealth technology

  • Telecommunication systems

  • Test chambers

  • Computer labs

  • GPS navigation

  • MRI machines and other medical equipment

  • Recording studios

  • Ground planes

Copper mesh screens for RFI shielding are optical, meaning the weave is fine enough that it won’t block the view from either side. This type of wire cloth is often used for shielded windows, but it’s suitable for a variety of other applications.

Copper Wire Mesh Specifications

The RFI wire mesh from TWP Inc. is manufactured from over 99% commercially pure woven copper per ANSI/AWCI-01-1992 quality standards. Each variation has a super-fine weave with either 16, 22, 100, 145, or 200 squares per linear inch.

The NASA Design Guidelines for Shielding Effectiveness from the NASA Contractor Report 4784 provides additional information on weave requirements for conductive meshes. (See pages 45 and 51.) TWP Inc.’s shielding effectiveness graph also illustrates the difference between copper wire meshes and plain weaves at various radio frequencies.
