Cryogenic Heat Exchangers

TWP Inc. supplies wire mesh for filtering gases and liquids in a variety of cuts, sizes, weaves, and materials. Fine copper mesh is the capillary wicking material primarily used in heat pipes. TWP Inc.’s mesh products are suitable for use with heat pipe wicks, cryogenic heat exchangers, cryocoolers, cold heads, and Stirling engines. However, stacks of mesh screen discs can be employed for a variety of other industrial, automotive, medical, agricultural, manufacturing, plumbing, farming, and pharmaceutical filtering applications.

Features & Uses

Wire mesh is the material of choice for cryogenic heat exchangers, regenerative coolers, and cold heads. Following production, the high-quality wire mesh from TWP Inc. is ultrasonically cleaned through ultrasound water and solvent agitation. Next, the material is certified through video inspection and XRF (X-ray fluorescence) alloy analysis. The result is a finished product that is ductile, pliable, malleable, and long-lasting.

Cryogenic heat exchangers and heat pipe wicks are resistant to:

  • Abrasion and tearing

  • Acids

  • Caustic fumes

  • Chemicals

  • Corrosion

  • Destructive gases

  • High temperatures

  • Hydraulic pressure

  • Oils

  • Saltwater

  • Shock and vibration

Our industrial-grade cryogenic wire mesh cloth can be used for absolute filtration of air and critical fluids in hostile environments, meaning the material can block 100 percent of solid particles larger than the micron filter size. It can also be used to achieve other desired flow rates and shield RFI (radio frequency interference) to prevent electronic malfunctions.

Materials, Weave Types & Sizing Options

TWP Inc. offers both certified copper and bronze stainless wire mesh for cryogenic filtration. Options include sintered wire mesh, mill finish, and bare mill finish, which is slightly oily. Wire mesh filters are available in both plain and twill weaves. This type of wick mesh cloth has square openings (filter ratings) between 140 and 43 microns (100 mesh to 325 mesh). In the heat pipe industry, copper meshes below 105 microns (145 mesh to 325 mesh) tend to be the most useful.

You can choose from different roll widths and sizing options, including square-foot cuts, swatches, and full rolls. With TWP Inc.’s in-house laser cutting and slitting services, you can also get custom sizes perfect for the needs of your application. The experts at TWP Inc. cut the mesh material with precision into proper shapes and sizes for use in the wicks of copper heat pipes. To reinforce the heat pipe wick structure, a bias cut (at a 45-degree angle from the straight wires) is employed, or several layers of mesh are stacked together.
