Designers Embrace the Fluidity of Wire Mesh
Most cities are consistently under development, so how can they preserve their history and culture? The RE-VAIL project in Changzhi, China, tried to answer that question last year. The Hong Kong firm Superimpose Architecture Design Studio transformed a historic factory into an exhibition center, where effervescent decorative wire mesh takes center stage. Draped from the ceiling, the white mesh sails between the beams, letting radiant sunlight filter through.
This Changzhi City Expo is one of the many outlets that are exploring the wonderful fluidity of using wire mesh in interior design. Too often in the past, people pigeonholed wire mesh as a material used only for rigid and practical applications. Now, they're reimagining the material as one that can be beautifully draped, hung, and shaped.
Decorative Metal Mesh Lightens Interiors
Modern all-metal furniture is sculpted for comfortably lounging on the porch. Colorful wire mesh curtains feature striking pop-art faces that class up restaurants and hotels. Seemingly weightless chicken wire ornaments adorn ceilings. The RE-VEIL exhibition took advantage of its decorative metal mesh ceiling drapery to not only let sunlight stream in, but also to create gorgeous light displays that could be adjusted depending on the occasion.
