Why buy new furniture when you can upcycle it to achieve the exact look you want? Upcycling is a great way to minimize the amount of discarded materials that end up in landfills, create one-of-a-kind items, and hone your DIY skills.
Want to revamp your furniture or home decor as well as save money? Wire mesh is the go-to material that makes it easy and affordable. What’s more, there’s a metal, weave, and style to suit your unique design, from contemporary to rustic.
Upcycle Your Furniture with Wire Mesh
At TWP Inc., we’re all about thinking outside the box to create something unexpected. Some of our favorite upcycled furniture ideas include hutches, coffee tables, and cabinets. We also appreciate repurposed frames and a broad range of other wire mesh home decor projects.
1. Hutch
Some call them hutches, and others call them credenzas or sideboards. In any case, restoring this furniture item is one of the easiest DIY upcycling projects. All you’ll need is a vintage hutch (or just one you already own), sandpaper, fresh paint, and some chicken wire.
Start by sanding down the existing unit to get rid of any surface scratches or chipped paint. Next, remove the wood or glass from each cabinet door. Then repaint (or refinish) the hutch and let it dry overnight. Lastly, you’ll attach the chicken wire to the back of each cabinet door to create a charming and appealing finished look.
2. Coffee Table
Wood coffee tables can take on a distressed, industrial vibe with a little wire mesh. Painted, scrubbed, or unfinished wood all look excellent with decorative mesh installed on the sides.
With a classic rectangular or square coffee table, you may opt to attach chicken wire or decorative wire mesh onto two of the sides. Alternatively, you could cover three or four sides. If you’re working with a coffee table that has a shelf, applying chicken wire to two or three sides is recommended. That way, you can still access it for storage.
3. Cabinets
Whether they’re attached to your walls or are stand-alone home furnishings, cabinets can be effortlessly transformed with a bit of decorative wire mesh. If you like a semi-open look that’s slightly more secure and discreet than exposed shelving, wire mesh cabinet doors are a perfect choice.
This DIY project is ideal for anyone who wants to repurpose old cabinets. It’s also a great option for those who wish to spruce up their existing cabinets instead of buying new ones. Similar to a hutch, you’ll need to remove the existing doors while leaving the frames intact. Then you can nail or staple the wire mesh to the inside of the cabinet doors. When you’re done, you’ll have cabinets with a country-rustic feel for your kitchen, bathroom, or any other room in your home.
4. Frames
When it comes to DIY home projects, one of our best-loved ideas is to repurpose frames. If you have unused frames lying around or are thinking of picking up a few at a flea market, there’s a lot you can do with simple chicken wire. Photo and art frames work well, but you can use window frames and old mirrors for this project, too.
With wire mesh, frames can be turned into:
Start by removing the glass and any other backing from each frame. Next, paint or refinish the wood, metal, or plastic, if needed. When you’re left with a simple four-sided frame, you can attach chicken wire to the back to create any number of fun home accents.
5. Home Decor
Why stop at frames when there’s so much more you can do with decorative wire mesh? In addition to upcycling furniture with wire mesh materials, you can spruce up a number of other pieces in your home.
Other wire mesh DIY home decor ideas include:
It’s easy to configure decorative accents with chicken wire and other metal mesh materials. With DIY home decor, the sky’s the limit. All you need are the right materials and a creative spirit.
