From ornaments and tchotchkes to wreaths and festive outdoor installations, chicken wire is a go-to for homemade holiday decor. ‘Tis the season to get your mesh on! Check out some of our favorite ideas.

Christmas Trees Made From Chicken Wire

Cone-shaped chicken wire Christmas trees are the perfect balance of contemporary with a little rustic charm. You can spray paint them any color and place them all around your home (or even outdoors!).

How to Make a Christmas Tree Using Chicken Wire

To fasten your own trees from hex mesh, you'll need:

  • Chicken wire (a large sheet or roll)
  • Fishing line or thin wire
  • Heavy-duty scissors or wire cutters
  • Spray paint in the color of your choice
  • Working gloves

Follow these steps to make your trees:

  1. Wearing gloves, cut the chicken wire into large squares (one for each tree).
  2. Form each square into a cone shape by rolling it up so there's a pointed tip on one end and a wide round opening on the other.
  3. Secure the seams with a few pieces of fishing line or wire.
  4. Some of the mesh will overlap at the base of the cone. Trim the excess with heavy-duty scissors or wire cutters.
  5. Spray-paint your finished trees and let them air-dry completely before placing them throughout your home.

Christmas Light Balls

Christmas light balls are just the thing for enhancing your outdoor space and wowing your neighbors this holiday season. They can be as small as a couple of inches or as big as a few feet, and best of all, they're inexpensive and notably easy to make! The best part is the fantastic range of LED light colors and bulb shapes you can use.

Christmas Ornaments

Talk about a fun project to do with the whole family! Christmas tree ornaments are relatively easy to make using chicken wire. There are many routes you can take, too, like simple wire-frame stars, traditional baubles, or modern snowflakes. Get creative! Choose brass mesh to create a sparkling reindeer ornament, or add rhinestones and plastic beads to create angel ornaments.

Framed Chicken Wire Wreath

You can't go wrong with a wreath during the holidays. Consider using hex mesh to create a unique framed effect, and hang it on your front door, in your foyer, or in the kitchen. Want to skip the frame? Follow your bliss! We love this merry chicken wreath made from chicken wire.

Designer Christmas Archway

To really wow your guests with yuletide cheer, you might try creating a Christmas doorframe or archway. All you'll need is chicken wire, fishing line, and adhesive hooks, along with any decorative baubles, ribbon, tinsel, or garland you choose to attach.
