Are greenhouses worth the investment? For many gardeners, the benefits far outweigh the costs! Greenhouses offer year-round growing opportunities and better control over your plants’ environment. A key element in many greenhouse designs is metal wire mesh, providing strength, support, and ventilation—making it an essential material for creating your ideal growing space.
Advantages Greenhouses Provide
Higher Yields. Consistent conditions spur greenhouse plants to produce more flowers and fruit.
Extended Growing Season. A greenhouse keeps plants warmer, so you can sow seeds weeks before the outdoor growing season arrives.
A Healthier Lifestyle is within reach with a greenhouse at your doorstep. Grow your own organic produce with less waste by picking exactly what you need.
Already decided a greenhouse is in your future? The best wire mesh for building a greenhouse depends on the specific needs of your structure, but generally, galvanized welded wire mesh is the most popular and effective choice.

Types of Greenhouses

Once you’ve decided a greenhouse is worth it for you, it’s time to choose the type of greenhouse you’d like.
- Freestanding Greenhouses: These self-supporting structures come in various shapes like domes, arches, and a-frames, offering flexibility and style for any garden space.
- Lean-To Greenhouses: Attached to your home, these three-sided greenhouses make the most of existing space, with the fourth wall integrated into your house’s exterior.
- Window-Mounted Greenhouses: The most compact option, perfect for small spaces. These attach to your window frame or replace it entirely, bringing the beauty of a greenhouse right into your home.
There’s a lot to consider before choosing a greenhouse, so weigh the pros and cons of each type. In addition, location, heating method, and air circulation approach are critical decisions when constructing a greenhouse, as is the choice of materials.
Ways to Use Wire Mesh in Greenhouses
Structural Support. Wire mesh makes an excellent framework for greenhouses. Galvanized welded wire mesh is strong enough to support plastic greenhouse walls through winter rain and snow.
Plant Bench Surface. Wire mesh sheets may be placed on top of plant benches for excellent air circulation. Welded stainless steel wire mesh is a great option!
Foundation Reinforcement. A permanent greenhouse, such as a greenhouse kit, will require a concrete pad or at least footings for a strong, wind-resistant base. For added strength and durability, include a layer of wire mesh sheet in the concrete.
Pest Prevention. Keep rodents and other pests out of your new greenhouse by lining access points with fine hardware cloth (for windows) and metal mesh (for openings larger than ¼-inch). You can also protect plants by enclosing them in a wire mesh box. Fine wire mesh can allow sunlight and water penetration while barring entry to small insects.
Plant Support. Wire mesh is a versatile and essential material for greenhouse plant support systems. It works perfectly as a trellis, offering a sturdy structure for climbing plants like peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans.
HVAC Systems. In hotter locales, greenhouses may include cooling systems to prevent plants from getting scorched. Wire mesh is used in HVAC systems to filter air and prevent dust and other harmful particles from damaging sensitive HVAC components.
Drainage Filtration. How will you drain water away from your greenhouse? Whether you plan to install a French drain or traditional gutters, wire mesh will be needed to prevent larger debris from clogging your drainage system.
What Wire is Best for Greenhouses?
Many gardeners prefer stainless steel wire mesh and galvanized hardware cloth for greenhouses because they are resistant to water corrosion and provide excellent rodent control. Corrosion resistance also makes a good choice.
Copper mesh may be installed on exterior entry points to avoid slug and snail damage. The wire diameter, mesh opening, and metal depend on your purpose. Smaller mesh openings will keep out insects, but provide little strength. Larger wire diameters will better support greenhouse structures, particularly if the wire mesh is welded.
