More information about Copper Wire Mesh
OVERVIEW
This is a plain square weave (over one, under one). Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity and is easily soldered. Copper mesh is ductile and malleable, but not as strong as brass.Copper Wire Mesh - Examples of Uses
- Snail control- any copper mesh may be used (selection would be based on strength and appearance). The snail receives a small but unpleasant electrical shock when it contacts copper mesh. Gardeners build small ground barrier strips or wrap stems and trunks with mesh bands. 2, 4,or 8 meshes would be a good choices for small snail fences. 22 mesh is a sturdy, easily formed mesh that wraps easily.

Copper Wire Mesh - Cutting
Copper mesh is easily cut with hand tools. The heavy meshes from 2 mesh through 10 mesh is best cut with tin snips. To cut 16 mesh and finer, you can use a common scissor.Copper Wire Mesh - Choosing
In general, our website gives detailed descriptions and pictures of many copper meshes. For someone unfamiliar with wire mesh terminology, 2 mesh has two wires in each direction in a square inch. You could easily pass a pencil through the openings. 50 mesh is the size commonly used in kitchen faucets. An 80 mesh has an opening which will barely pass a human hair. A piece of paper is about three thousandths (.003) of an inch. Copper wire mesh samples are available and can be ordered online.Choosing a copper RFI shielding mesh
Radio frequency shielding and Faraday construction can be accomplished with three popular copper meshes. 16 mesh .011inch wire diameter has a high airflow but the lowest shielding effectiveness. 22 mesh .015 inch wire diameter is specified by the U S government Tempest program. It is a very sturdy mesh which still has good airflow but than 16 mesh. 100 mesh .0045 inch wire diameter is the finest practical copper shielding mesh. It has restricted airflow but is quite effective into the higher frequencies.Copper Wire Mesh - Look and Feel
Copper mesh is the softest of our metals and may be easily bent with your hand and has very little springback after being bent or formed. It is a yellowish red color when first woven* and will gradually patina (discolor) to a greenish/bluish called verdigris. This patina effect may be accelerated by first removing surface oil from the mesh using "Shower Power" TM or similar mild household cleaning product, then rinsing it well, this will leave the copper shiny but unprotected.and ready to change color in the air. In an outdoor environment, the discoloration will become pronounced in less than six months at the seashore or it may remain untarnished for years in desert conditions. This discoloration may be stopped by lacquering, waxing, or periodically oiling the mesh to protect it from atmospheric conditions. An alternate means of changing the color is to heat the copper in an oven or with a torch and it will progress through a spectrum of colors and remain at the color that it was when it was removed from the heat. Yellows, oranges, blues, are among the colors that copper screen can be changed to using heat.- Since the color of copper mesh is affected by the atmosphere, We try to package carefully to protect the color as much as possible but we still cannot guarantee a uniformed, brilliant polished finish when you receive it.
Copper mesh radio antenna ground plane (counterpoise)on fiberglass & wooden boats
The function of a High frequency SSB ground plane on a boat is to couple the grounded half of the antenna circuit to the water that surrounds the vessel. You may achieve this coupling directly or inductively. Direct coupling uses a grounding plate, or other submerged conductor. Gordon West wrote a fine article on using metal parts as small as a thru hull fitting as a ground connection. You also may couple to the ground inductively through connection to a large metal surface, which is close to but insolated from the water. Examples of large metal surfaces include water tanks, encased metal keels, copper wire screen that is near the hull and below the waterline. connections from the transmitter or antenna tuner should be made using a copper strap about 3 inches wide the strap can be purchased at West Marine or formed by folding wire mesh into a 3 inch wide ribbon. Wire mesh is generally a 16 mesh.011 copper (a thin flexible screen) or a 22 mesh .015 wire diameter (a sturdy easily soldered screen) Attachment between the grounding screen and feed ribbon should be soldered and then protected against corrosion. A ground system on a vessel should be installed by a licensed marine electrician familiar with the issues involved which may include electrolysis, electrical shock hazard , sparking, damage to electrical and navigation equipment.Copper mesh samples - Samples
