Copper Wire Mesh - Technical Information This is a plain square weave (over one, under one). Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity and is easily soldered. Copper mesh is ductile and malleable, but not as strong as brass. Chemical composition: commercially pure copper (copper content 99% minimum). Good corrosion resistance to atmosphere, most alkaline solutions and many organic chemicals. Weaving meets ANSI/AWCI - 01 -1992 and ASTM E 2016-99 and RRW 360. Excellent consumer appeal. For Copper alloy meshes finer than 100, see Bronze Wire Cloth. For further details see our copper mesh data table page for opening sizes, weight, open area information.
Copper mesh is the softest of our metals and may be easily bent with your hand and has very little springback after being bent or formed. It is a yellowish red color when first woven* and will gradually patina (discolor) to a greenish/bluish called verdigris. This patina effect may be accelerated by first removing surface oil from the mesh using "Shower Power" TM or similar mild household cleaning product, then rinsing it well, followed by an overnight exposure to an atmosphere of household ammonia. This process is not for children and you should use gloves and safety mask when using any chemical. In an outdoor environment, the discoloration will become pronounced as soon as six months at the seashore up to 14 to 20 years in desert conditions. This discoloration may be stopped by lacquering, waxing, or periodically oiling the mesh to protect it from atmospheric conditions. An alternate means of changing the color is to heat the copper in an over or with a torch and it will progress through a spectrum of colors and remain at the color that it was when it was removed the heat. Copper wire mesh samples are available and can be ordered online. Sample Policy TWP Inc. will provide samples for your testing and inspection. The cost is $8 per sample ordered (plus UPS Charges). In general, our meshphoto.com site gives detailed descriptions and pictures of many copper meshes. For someone unfamiliar with wire mesh terminology, 2 mesh has two wires in each direction in a square inch. You could easily pass a pencil through the openings. 16 mesh is what is used in a window or porch screens to keep out common insects. 60 mesh is the size commonly used in kitchen faucets. An 80 mesh has an opening which will barely pass a human hair. A piece of paper is about three thousandths (.003) of an inch. Copper wire mesh samples are available and can be ordered online.
